I'd also encourage linux users to try the patches at:
http://debs.fuller.edu/e2compr/ I've been using these ext2fs
compression patches for some time now, with pretty good luck. you can
compress files by doing a 'chattr +c file' and then it's
transparently compressed on the disk. I've got a workable (non-X)
debian linux system on my 15cf+4cf drives, and a full one on the
260meg HDD. It does slow things considerably in some cases, however.
it has to be tuned to your particular circumstance.
